Basic Leadership Development Course (BLDC) and Gender Mainstreaming Workshop

Brief Note

The “Basic Leadership Development  and Gender Mains13616288_10154106816995395_358727154_otreaming” workshop conducted by National Campaign for Education Nepal (NCE Nepal) successfully contributed in aligning the youth and leadership to the global debate and also in drawing the attention regarding the importance of Gender as well as Gender Mainstreaming in the Education. The workshop aimed    to create a pool of enthusiastic, optimistic, confidence and decisive youth leaders’ from different coalitions and member organization of NCE Nepal, finally added up to develop participatory leadership capabilities needed to conduct education campaigns from local to national levels. In addition to this, the workshop helped to inspire young and experienced leaders to be drivers of change and voice out the aspirations in education and development of marginalized communities.

The overall workshop gyrated around the youth issues and the framework for youth leadership, and gender equality. Furthermore, the workshop also bounced off the issues of Sustainable development goal 4 and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) . and education and the Nepal specific parameters for it, youth issues and framework for youth leadership, , Co- creating Action plans. The workshop was kicked off from welcome speech by NCE Nepal chairperson Mr. Raj Kumar Gandharba and followed by opening session of Ms. Anita Borkar (Trainer for transformation from ASPBAE) and Ms. Cecilia Soriano (Programmer and operations coor13589048_10154106849960395_1907931308_odinator from ASPBAE) using 3H (Head, Heart and Hand) theory.  The theory added up regarding the leadership within head (i.e. to think), Heart (i.e. to feel) and Hand (i.e. for action).

Participants especially youth activists from more than twenty six different member organizations of NCE Nepal were gathered and trained in the workshop. These activitsts included those from the non-governmental organizations, federations, education media organizations, teachers and educationist working in different indigenous groups. The overall workshop was based on the participative method whereby the participants discussed on challenges and situation of good leadership focusing on their strength and weaknesses.

The overall program began with the formation of the learning groups whereby the participants got divided into the five different groups and the name, logo as well as the slogan of the groups were developed. Highlighting upon the team building and smooth operation in the team as an important feature of the leader, the overall workshop contributed to the particIMG_0064ipants for the synergic effect in the work through the team spirit. 

Followed by the four major domains of gender equality and education (i.e., governance, capabilities, resource & opportunities and security) and also the importance of gender equality in education, the overall workshop contributed in developing the Nepal specific parameters for gender equality in education. The participants agreed that “Right to Education” cannot ensure Gender Equality in Education; rather, it should be focused on “Right within Education and Right through Education” too.

 Furthermore, the workshop got enriched with the appreciative inquiry method of learning which was highly appreciated by the participants too.  The study of high human ideals achievements with best practices, and noble accomplishments within the group, these phenomena,  flourished the participants minIMG_0036d and  deliberated by asking positive questions to ignite constructive dialogue. Furthermore, one more “D” as Demand was added by the participants in the list of 4 D’s (i.e. Discovery, Dream, Design and Destiny) as envisioned by the facilitators. Moreover, the the quiz contest session regarding the Sustainable Development Goal 4 facilitated by Mr. Ram Gaire, Program Manager of NCE Nepal highlighted the important foundations of the SDG. The  session also contributed in enhancing the knowledge of the participants regarding the Goal 4 targets, indicators as well as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).   

Moreover, the session also added in the knowledge regarding the organizational leadership with the presentation by Dr. Narayan Kafle, Board member of NCE Nepal . Finally, the overall workshop contributed in the formation of three thematic groups from among the participants namely: Gender Equality Group, Youth and Advocacy Group and ESD group. The groups also prepared the Terms of Reference (ToR) whereby they themselves developed the overall framework of mobilizing the team and expanding the network and also cascading their learning in the upcoming days. . A part form it, each o13639810_10154107830220395_84966729_of the participants provided their commitment regarding the changes that they would make after returning back from the workshop.

The overall workshop wrapped up with the evaluation of the overall program through the Audit sheet and also the distribution of Token of Love to the facilitators. NCE Nepal has sowed a milestone in creating the youth as a leader for change and ASPBAE role was considered to be a crucial one.
