The history of National Campaign for Education-Nepal (NCE Nepal) can be traced way back in April 2003, when the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) Nepal came into existence as an implementing partner of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE). GCE Nepal was established as a result of collective efforts to mark the Global Action Week in April the same year. The Action Week, which emphasized on girls’ education to narrow the gender gap in education, was successfully organized in Nepal with the participation of more than 5,000 children. Continuing the trend, the Steering Committee of the GCE decided to include more organizations in order to make the Action Week more effective. All coalition members felt that there was a need to register the organization as a legal entity for carrying out advocacy interventions in education. As a result, NCE Nepal was established on 5th April 2010 to succeed the GCE Nepal.

NCE Nepal is a civil society movement whose mandate is to ensure quality education for all. The key role of the movement is therefore to raise the voice of the voiceless so as to guarantee quality education in an equitable basis and to every child. Currently, it has 52 members ranging from International and National non-government organisations, federation, education journalists, teachers’ organisations to grassroots institutions working in the field of education and child rights. NCE Nepal is therefore a platform for sharing experiences and learning among the members who have common issues of concern.

NCE Nepal mainly focuses on holding the government agencies accountable for their role in providing quality ‘Education for All’ and in monitoring the service delivery at the grassroots and national level. Similarly, NCE Nepal critically engages with the government and its agencies involved in education so that the overarching goal of EFA can be achieved within the stipulated time, ie by 2015.

Being a national chapter of GCE, the NCE Nepal also acts locally, regionally and internationally. It supports GCE in advocating for EFA goals which all the GCE member countries’ governments have made commitment.

For NCE Nepal, quality education is an uncompromising agenda and national advocacy for formation, reformation and implementation of the state policies is the ultimate end to achieve its goals. The organization represents the concerted efforts of Nepalese education rights activists and apologists that imbibe the spirit of the GCE working in more than 150 countries across the world towards the goal of ensuring quality education for all.

NCE Nepal believes in: “Inclusive, accessible and quality education for all.”

A Nepal in which every child and adult is educated and literate.

To hold the government, non-government agencies, and all stakeholders accountable to the citizens in order to ensure the rights of the people to quality education and literacy.

To establish free, compulsory and quality education to children and literacy to the adults as their fundamental rights

The National Campaign for Education-Nepal is motivated by the fact that quality public education for all is attainable, regardless of the many attempts that have failed in the past. In this knowledge-based economy, exclusion of even a single citizen from education would bring him or her to poverty, inequality, deprivation and ultimately conflict.

NCE Nepal dedicates itself to achieve its mission with impartiality, transparency and accountability, adopting democratic norms and processes in all its plans, actions and activities. In order to achieve its goal, NCE Nepal has the following objectives:

·         To advocate with the state for conducive policies for ensuring ”Education For All (EFA) ” by 2015

·         To carry out research on the issues related to education and violation of education rights

·         To monitor the programs and policies of the state and bring the findings out

·         To empower the children, parents, members of school management committees, teachers, education rights activists and stakeholders, to play their respective roles effectively

·         To build and strengthen alliances, networks, coalitions and social movements for ensuring education rights

·         To develop NCE Nepal as a Resource Centre for education-related purposes

We Believe Education Is

·         A universal human right

·         The key to poverty alleviation and sustainable human development

·         A core responsibility of the state

·         Attainable if the government has political will and increases investment in education sector.
